Things & Stuff, Stuff & Things

When landlines were our only means of communication I attempted the stay-at-home mom thing, I wasn't good at it, and only lasted 3 months,1000 stars to those that are. My husband, Doug, would call home to check on us and the phone would ring and ring and ring. At first, he worried until he realized that each time we finally connected and he would ask where have you been? What have you been doing? I'd always answer, "things & stuff", in a sing-songy manner. He would laugh and would typically say, "like what? I would reply, "stuff & things", in the same sing-songy manner he would laugh again, then we would just move on to our brief chatting. Neither one of us enjoy chatting on the phone so the words quickly became a part of our family language. Things & stuff, stuff & things became the common reply when either of us would check in about our day.

Later, that day or even weeks later the goings on about xyz day would come out in conversation. The conversation would go something like this, "you know that day when you called and I said stuff & things, well so and so happened at the blankety-blank".

We have cell phones now and still reply in this manner. Today the conversation goes, "Whatcha doing?" replies, "things & stuff, stuff & things", ok cool don't forget we have to do xyz later, etc.

Today things & stuff and/or stuff & things include fighting for human rights policies that ensure privacy, healthcare, and reproductive autonomy. I believe all people have the right to own and control their bodies. I believe that we must have a separation of church and state and that private, medical care should be solely between the patient and a licensed Doctor. I believe that all people should have the right to liberty and that politicians should work on the issues that help all people and our environment and that they should stay out of our personal lives. I believe that complacency is viewed as acceptance.
